The World Cup is about to start, so sit back and relax . . . ITV are!

With the World Cup due to kick off today there is huge expectation across the UK. However, for those of you nervously awaiting the first England game it is perhaps the TV industry that are the most thankful. The World Cup traditionally offers a much needed boost to male targeted advertisers. Nike, Carlsberg, The Sun, Adidas & Umbro are but a few scheduled to appear on screen over the following weeks.

A single 30 second spot in England’s group matches against the USA and Algeria, aired exclusively on ITV, is priced at a conservative £300k. For those with smaller budgets you can pay between £20k to £70k for a non-England group game. With England expected to progress deep into the competition the prices are likely to rocket further; what price for a 30 second spot within the World Cup Final featuring England? Demand will obviously determine the price but with the nation tending to turn to the BBC in times of national events the price is unlikely to match those of the Super Bowl on US TV channels.

However, with those air-time costs in place you can bet that the ITV CEO, Adam Crozier, will breathe a little easier. According to Screen Digest, the UK TV market is set to benefit by as much as £50m from the event. ITV, themselves, are banking on a £30m ad revenue boost. Just enough to cover the hiring of Adrian Chiles … perhaps!
