Visualising visitors with keyword maps

May 18th, 2010 · Ric · No Comments

We get a lot of visitors to our website and blog each month so like to look at the stats to see which pages are popular. We’ve got a bit of a competition running in the office to write most popular blog story (I’m losing by quite a way, although mine are far more interesting!). I also want to optimise our client’s websites as effectively as possible to ensure good search engine ranking. For this reason it’s useful to be able to look at where visitors come from in a number of different and inventive ways.

The word map above shows all the phrases including the word Guernsey that visitors to our website used in their search engine of choice. We can see people a lot of people search for betley > whitehorne > guernsey, and also guernsey > photography festival. The size and colour of the text denote various things such as the number of people using the word, if they’re new or returning visitors etc. It’s certainly much easier to read and understand than looking through a table.

Centring on the word advertising we can read that guernsey is popular as is agencies. My personal favourite is: leading design and > advertising > agencies. From reading this chart we can visually see where we are strong, and rankly highly, and also where we might need to review the keywords used on our site.

We’ve quite a number of lego based blog stories including one about James May’s lego house, which is the most popular on the site. This keyword map confirms that.

Here is the map for the word passport on All About Guernsey. It’s more complex than the others denoting the many different things people are search for. However from this we can read the main theme is do people need a passport to visit guernsey. Knowing this we want to make sure the website answers this question in a concise and helpful manner.

The maps making identifying themes easier and highlight potential problems or even surprises of how your visitors find you site, allowing you to tailor and optimise your content.
