With under a week now until the Big Night is upon us, I simply can’t believe where the last 3 months have gone. Happily for me, the nightmare of that first training weekend (see Diary Part 1) seems a lifetime ago.
‘Practise makes perfect’ may not be entirely accurate in terms of the perfection bit, but repetition can go a long way towards overcoming a seemingly impossible situation such as a complicated Jive dance routine, or even to complete the Viennese Waltz in a vaguely elegant manner. For twice a week now, at almost 2 hours per session, my dance partner Lyndsey and I have scrutinised, analysed and practised both routines until they have become more ‘friend’ than ‘foe’.
And Lyndsey has been a brilliant teacher. Patient, measured, calm — demanding where needed and always enthusiastic over improvements. If I had to teach myself, I’d be writing rather different adjectives!
Whether or not my dance skills will have improved outside of these set routines is unknown and I guess that my original reasons for participating in this event are now slightly irrelevant. However, despite the initial fear, and the long, cold practise nights, it’s been fun to have been involved in Guernsey’s version of Strictly.
My biggest fear, though, is still to be overcome — the live event itself, next Saturday night, where my nightmare scenario has me standing on the dance floor with a sudden memory loss for the steps that have been so painstakingly rehearsed.
Fingers crossed. I’ll let you know.
