What every lawn needs…

The sheep chomps his way through another lawn

If you have ever thought a lawnmower to be a rather mundane piece of garden equipment, you may have to think again, thanks to artist Osman Khan.

The American artist has developed a robotic sheep lawnmower, for those who fancy spicing up their lawns with something a bit different.  With allusions to green projects involving using livestock as grass-trimmers, the plan is to place Moe, the robo-sheep, on a lawn, whereupon it will autonomously roam throughout the area, trimming as it goes.

The mouth of the sheep contains a grass mowing device and the head has navigational and obstacle avoidance sensors, while the sheep itself (or himself, as I like to think) boasts quadrupal walking mechanics on six small legs.

The man behind the sheep, Osman Khan, is an artist interested in using technology to construct works and experiences for social criticism and aesthetic expression, exploring certain themes to see how technology fabricates, as well as subverts, our understanding of identity, space and communication through participatory installations and interventions.

This is very cool. I want one, not to explore if it subverts my understanding of identity, space and communication, but merely because I like it!
