Betley Whitehorne Top Google

September 16th, 2008 · Ric · No Comments

With the launch of our new website in March of this year I took the opportunity to properly optimise it for search engines as our old site ranked very poorly. As the new site is primarily flash based it took a few special tricks and ideas to maximise our position, but they seem to have worked.

If you use keywords for our industry such as design, advertising agency, branding, web design etc, along with Guernsey - to find local results - we regularly pop up highly. Searching more broadly for design and advertising agency (Guernsey is omitted from the search) shows us in the top ten results for the entire world.

Improving search ranking can be a slow process - if anyone guarantees you they can get you to number one in google they're lying, everyone else wants the top spot too and will be competing to get it. You can however improve your chances of reaching the top. Over the last few months I've been analysing how we've been found, what keywords were used, where people came from and optimise the website accordingly - our rank has steadily increased, and with that more people have found the Betley Whitehorne website, allowing me to further tune the it using the additional data collected.

This optimisation doesn't only apply to the Betley Whitehorne site, I have used what I learnt when creating our Content Management System (a system that allows people to update their own website's content without any specialist knowledge) and our clients' websites. This ensures that each site we design has strong foundations for gaining optimal ranking. A newly created site however is rarely going to hit the top of google without ongoing analysis and optimisation, and even if you do reach the top you need to ensure your site is designed well, is easy to use, and most importantly the content is relevant and up-to-date.
