The Guernsey Arts Commission are promoting a new event you can all get involved in. The details are as follows:

Pianos in the street of St Peter Port…

Musical or not, we invite you to play the pianos and get involved with this community arts project.

‘Let’s Play’
Pianos in the streets of St Peter Port is a community arts project which has been masterminded by local musician conductor James Henderson and supported by the Guernsey Arts Commission.

Following an article in the Guernsey Press at the beginning of August where James appealed for pianos to be donated to the project, there was an overwhelming response from the community and five pianos were donated the same day that the article appeared. Four out of the five were suitable and so these pianos will now be put in place at: Beau Sejour Leisure Centre main reception area, the Candie Gardens bandstand area, outside the Guernsey Information Centre and in the Inner Street at Market Square. James and the Guernsey Arts Commission invite the local community to ‘get involved’ with the arts and embrace the enjoyment music can bring, as James comments, “If people see a piano, it’s like an invitation. Even those who say they don’t play will remember something. It’s human instinct. It brings people together.”

‘Let’s Play’ is based on a project that saw 15 pianos being placed in the streets of Birmingham in March of this year by artist Luke Jerram and the Fierce arts 0rganisation, awaiting the communities in the city to have a ‘play’. It was hugely successful and caught the eye of James Henderson when it appeared in a magazine, thinking it could translate to Guernsey James contacted Joanna Littlejohns (Arts Development Officer, Guernsey Arts Commission) who offered her support for this fun community focused ‘arts outside’ project.

It is planned for these four pianos to adorn the streets for the next two to three weeks.

  1. Greenhouse Exhibition: Public Art — part one
  2. Greenhouse Exhibition: Pens & Lens
  3. International Artist in Residence Programme: Art and Islands
  4. James May and His Lego House
  5. The Guernsey Community Awards
