Jersey based artist Jason Butler is currently exhibiting in Guernsey at ‘The Gallery’ in Mansell Street.
The work on show at ‘The Gallery’ comprises of portraits, both commissioned and private and the ongoing body of work, ‘Outsiders’. A number of drawings will hang along side a large number of paintings.
Jason has painted a significant number of portrait commissions, particularly over the past 16 months. These range from children to adults. The work attempts to encapsulate the sitter’s character through detailed observation and physicality through the use of oil paint. Two of the works Jason has had accepted into the National Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London are also being exhibited. These two paintings were completed from life and demonstrate an unerring reality.
The concept based work ‘Outsiders’ comprises of a set figures taken from an eclectic range of imagery, particularly the book ‘1000 Tattoos’ by Taschen. Revelling in the idiosyncrasies of his subjects, Jason makes images, which confound and fascinate in equal measure. The series of drawings ‘Twins’ will also be exhibited for the first time. These ink drawings, with two duplicated figures raise a number of questions whilst endeavouring to achieve a simple aesthetic.
