Crystal Island — the world’s largest building

January 29th, 2008 · Paul · 1 Comment

Moscow planners have approved Lord Foster’s design for the world’s biggest building. The British architect’s £2bn “city within a city”, Crystal Island, will be built on the banks of the Moscow river, with a total floor area of 2.5 million square metres, making it the largest enclosed space ever to be constructed. This is approximately equal to twice the area of Herm Island, Guernsey!

Font Clock

Font Clock

This wonderful font explosion is from designer Sebastian Wrong and manufacturer Established & Sons. It is a time and date flip clock that uses twelve very distinct typefaces in its display. It comes in three different sizes, the smallest only including the time section. Unfortunately at a little over £800 I can’t afford one at the moment.

If you would like to know more about Sebastian Wrong and other designers at Established & Sons visit their site.

The essence of the idea is the twelve fonts, all chosen for their design strength and individuality and all of which are twentieth century apart from one, an English 18th century script. In theory, at given points within the annual time cycle, all the fonts will run together for five minutes.

The Haçienda

January 18th, 2008 · Ash · 1 Comment

While in Manchester over Christmas I visted the Urbis Centre, an interesting building in itself but you can depend on it to have interesting exhibitions on. Not knowing what would be on this time round I was pleased to find the D&AD exhibition of 2008 award winners and an exhibition on the Hacienda club.

The Hacienda club, owned by Factory Records, was celebrating 25 years since the opening of the club which introduced the ‘madchester’ era. This was a bit before before my time but viewing the exhibition made me wish I was around at that time in Manchester!

The New BBC Three Rebrand

January 16th, 2008 · Adam · 2 Comments

Old BBC Three LogoNew BBC Three Logo

BBC Three is having a rebrand and here is it’s new logo design. I like it, although at the moment it reminds me of something else that I can’t quite put my finger on. It has a bit of the Sky TV ‘see speak surf’ logo about it and I am sure those e’s are familiar. If anyone knows what I’m thinking of or suspect i’m imagining it please do not hesitate to electronically blog it down.

Check out the BBC Three rebrand

Many thanks to Lee who posted in suggesting that the logo I was thinking was ‘Heart FM’ and it is. I have just had a look at the logo and realised the simalarities were more than I had thought. Using the magic of computers and photoshop I have made a shoddy arrangement of the heart letters to make the three logo. If I was to just squash it down a bit I think you would have the older brother of the BBC brand.

Hungry for Hits

January 16th, 2008 · Ric · 2 Comments

hungryforhits2.jpgI’ve discovered that a good way to find a place in the hearts of work colleagues is to bake them some biscuits. It shows a lot more love that just buying some cakes from the shop. As I started at Betley Whitehorne just before my birthday it was the perfect opportunity for me to don my apron and get creative in the kitchen. In the past I’ve posted my creations on my website for all to see.

If you’re a bit of a t-shirt fan like myself you’ll enjoy the Threadless T-Shirts site. It’s got a great range of cool tees for you to purchase, and even though they come all the way from the US of A they’re not too expensive and don’t take long to arrive.

Helvetica — The Movie

January 7th, 2008 · Adam · 1 Comment

Helvetica is a feature length documentary about typography, graphic design and visual culture. It investigates the proliferation of one typeface — helvetica.

I don’t think there are enough design documentaries like this about. It is a very fascinating film which deals with the birth of the typeface and its 5o year journey so far.
