the greenhouse exhibition: Off the Page

November 30th, 2007 · Ric · No Comments

A new exhibition at the greenhouse gallery opens tonight featuring artists' books.

You may think you know what a book is...
a cover, a bound spine, numbered pages, some have pictures, some have just words, many lead you unto a world imaginary characters and others give you knowledge and understanding.

BUT have you ever considered...
ceramic tiles for pages, a spine made from bandages, a leather strap with fastening buckle as the cover - as a book?

'Off the Page' - an exhibition designed to introduce the contemporary, innovative and energetic art form that is the Artist's book.

Emerging in the 1960's as a way of bypassing the constraints of the gallery, Artists' Books have become a radical way of bringing art to art to a wider audience through artists self-publishing their work. This notion of making art in an affordable non-wall based format led to the growth of what we now recognise as the Artist's Book.

Combining traditional and digital creative methods, Artists' Books are flourishing and evolving into a significant and current art form, spurred on by the increased interest in conceptual contemporary art across all disciplines.

It runs from Friday 30 November 2007 - Thursday 31 January 2008. Opening hours: Monday - Friday 9.00 - 17.00; Saturday 9.00 - 13.00. Admission free.
